ANNUAL REPORT 2009—10
It is with a strong sense of pride and expectations I am here to present the report of the overall activities of the college during the ongoing academic year. Building upon the tempo and momentum carried over from previous years, the college has remained vibrant with curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities. Given the limited space and time, some information has been compressed or altogether left out. A longer version of the report that includes everything will be published in the college website.
College Union The College union and association office bearers were elected through a free and fair election in the first term of the year, with Sri V. Ramakrishnan as the returning officer. Sri. C.B.Chithrabhanu serves as the staff advisor to the union. The union has conceived and executed diverse programs like art fetes, film shows, seminars and talks. I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank everyone behind the union’s achievements and hope it has set an ideal precedent for the posterity.
National Cadet Corps (NCC) Sri. P. Abdu is the caretaker of the NCC. There is one company of 160 cadets (108 boys and 52 girls) under the command and control of 28(k)Bn.NCC Ottappalam. During the year, 120 of them took part in annual training camps; one cadet participated in the trekking expedition held in Sikkim and in the National Integration camp held at Thodupuzha. 80 cadets appeared for B and 25 for C certificate examinations. Three cadets got placement in the Indian Air Force. Independence day , Gandhi Jayanthi , NCC day and Republic day were celebrated elegantly. The Deputy Director of Collegiate Education and the former ANO of this college DR.(Major) O.Venugopal inaugurated the Republic day celebrations. The unit conducted a seminar on Prospects of NCC, an awareness program on traffic rules, ragging and cyber crime, a blood grouping camp and formed a blood donation wing. The unit also conducted a trekking expedition to the nearby Ramagiri fort.
Compulsory Social Service (CSS) Cleaning and upkeep of the campus, to a great extent, is carried out by students as part of the compulsory social service. Sri. V.P. VIjayan is the teacher in charge of the scheme.
Research Activities The departments of Sanskrit and Malayalam have been recognized as research centers by the University of Calicut. There are fifteen doctoral scholars five and guides from both sections. Five doctoral open defenses took place during this academic year.
Departmental Activities The department of commerce conducted a seminar on business system and information management and orientation program on various certificate courses on capital market. The department also offers training for ICWAE on weekdays. The department of Malayalam conducted a one day workshop on the restructuring of undergraduate education with the financial assistance of the Kerala State Higher Education Council. The department, in association with the Multimedia Center, conducted a one day workshop on the basics and possibilities of the medium of blog. The department joined hands with the Folklore Fellows of Malabar (trust) to commemorate the noted scholar, teacher and musician Sri T.P.Sukumaran. The department of English, in association with the Multimedia Center, is running an add- on course on communicative English. The course is funded by the government of Kerala. The department of Sanskrit in association with the college union organized a daylong session on film making. The program featured talks on the basic nature and possibilities of cinema and practical lessons.
General Library The General Library of the college has a vast and rare collection of ancient palm leaf manuscripts and historically invaluable documents apart from 50,831-strong regular books. There are 282 palm manuscripts and 208 bound volumes of journals. In addition, there is a reading room attached to the library providing current journals and newspapers.
Parent Teacher Association (PTA) The PTA intervenes in almost every aspect of the college by providing logistical support and financial assistance. Model examinations, class level parent-teacher meetings, talks, seminars, Founder’s Day, youth festival participation and zonal &inter-zonal level art fetes bank on the PTA for monetary backing. The PTA has been running a short term computer course for undergraduate students. Most remarkable is the role the PTA has played in diffusing the tension born of occasional skirmishes and to keep the campus peaceful and conducive for learning.
College Development Committee (CDC) The CDC that comprises elected public representatives, district collector, students and teachers has been in place since 1987. It caters to the infrastructural and academic needs and aspirations of the college by providing financial support. This year the CDC chipped in a substantial sum for the construction of the new canteen-cum-post office building and undertook other renovation activities.
Funding agencies The UGC has granted 10,500,000 and grant actually allotted more than 1,000,000 as part of the ongoing XI plan. The college has received Rs. 15,00,000 as plan fund in the current year and has utilized the amount almost in full. The postgraduate department of Chemistry has been selected by the Department of Science and Technology for s special aid of Rs, 36 laks under FIST. Fund utilization is steered by a committee of teachers and office staff specially formed for the purpose. Sports and Games The college had a memorable and promsing year in terms of participation and victory. Our teams took part in the shuttle badminton (men and women), cricket, football, basketball, softball (women), athletics, gymnastics and kalaripayattu. The college finished second in the University zonal level badminton. In the interzone level, our girls finished fourth, for the first time in the history of the college. The gymnastics team bagged second position in the university level. K.V. Vineeth was first in the floor exercise section. Our kalari team won the first prize in the team event section. It is encouraging to note that women softball team participated in the inter-collegiate competition. A promising performance was put in by the football, cricket and athletic teams too.
Multimedia Center The Multimedia Center continued to run the college website, the electronic journal and to provide technical assistance. It joined hands with other departments and platforms in providing training programs and organizing programs like NET training and film shows. In addition, the center has started an education portal through which it proposes to impart universal, quality education. The center, in association with the department of Sanskrit, has started the preliminary steps to digitize the extant works of the founder of the college. The Interdisciplinary Forum, a part of the Multimedia Center , organized a large scale seminar entitled ‘Deflationary Paradox in India. Placement Cell The Placement Cell has conducted a number of events aimed at equipping students to find jobs and guiding them in higher studies. The Cell arranged a training session on group discussion The Cell regularly circulates notices among students highlighting admission notifications of prestigious institutions and universities such as JNU, IITs and CUSAT. The Cell has associated with firms such as Pathfinder Consultancy, K.G. Information Systems Private LTd., eCampus, Eureka Forbes, Reliance, Cyber Services. Mahindra Fiance, ICFAI and NIIT in the academic year. Résumés of outgoing students have bee sent to many recruiting agencies to brighten their employment prospects. In addition, the cell is offering courses in NET and CAT in association with other departments. Women’s Cell The Women’s Cell has been constituted with a view to address and redress the many issues faced by women in the college. Dr. N.K. Geetha is the convener of the cell. Under the auspices of the Cell, a talk was conducted on ‘Women and Law’. Adv. K.M. Arya delivered the talk and Dr. N.K. Geetha, Coordinator of the Cell, presided over the function Music Club The Music Club, headed by Mrs. P.K. Prasanna, periodically arranges gathering wherein students get a chance to sing different kinds of songs and hone their skills. Fine Arts Club The Fine Arts club remained vibrant and vigorous throughout the year, conducting events and more importantly equipping students in participating in the zonal and inter-zonal level competitions. I would like to thank the sincere and concerted work put in the office bearers in inspiring and assisting students in various competitions. The fact that our students fared fairly well in the A Zone. The college made its presence felt in the interzone by winning second in English essay and third in Sanskrit essawon third prize in Hindi versification and essay. This achievement, I hope, will spur others to scale heights in the days to come. Entrepreneur Development (ED) Club Dormant for years, the ED Club has been recently revived with Mr. N.K. Babu as the convener. The club has chalked out plans to nourish entrepreneurial skills in students and to give them better perceptions on evolving business scenario with the assistance of governmental agencies. During the current year, it conducted a seminar on Entrepreneur Capital and Cooperation. Computer Center The computer center is the physical space where the course offered by the PTA takes place. Broadband internet access, laser printout and photocopy are the other principal services offered by the center. I am glad to not that the number of internet users, especially among the student community, has marked substantial hike in the present year.
